"The mopheads or whatever"

By |2013-08-05T04:35:07-07:00January 21, 2013|1966, John Lennon, Paul McCartney|

Yoko Ono and an apple, 1966. Browsing in a used bookstore last night, I came across this quote in Rolling Stone Raves: What Your Rock & Roll Favorites Favor (1999): Yoko Ono: "No, I didn't know any of [the Beatles' music when I met John Lennon.] I had heard about the band, the mopheads or whatever. I knew that they were making a big impact on people, like a social phenomenon. I just never got around to listening to their music." [1992] My first reaction was "Wow." I mean, I knew Yoko was no Beatles fan when she met Lennon, [...]

"Reminiscing"

By |2015-01-04T00:40:18-08:00January 17, 2013|1970s, John Lennon|

Ran across this oldie this evening in my ramblings, and flashed on something from my reading: John Lennon, lolling in some Midtown bed with May Pang in the late 70s, claiming that this was one of "their songs."I remember finding it very sweet that, even after the strange intense life he'd led, John Lennon OF THE BEATLES, could get hooked on some cheesy syrupy pop tune.Am I remembering it right? Hive mind, help me out. http://youtu.be/voQWlL-jj5Q

Yoko Ono on the Breakup

By |2014-12-27T11:33:31-08:00December 29, 2012|1970, John and Paul, John Lennon|

"They were getting to be like Paul's band, which they didn't like," quoth the Yoko, via The Huffington Post. The interview's from 1987, and it's from Rolling Stone, so we can expect it to be simple-minded and St. Lennon-ish; but this canard deserves a bit of scorn. Can I? Thanks.Oh what a shame it was for Paul to run roughshod over those other three grown men, forcing stuff like "Hey Jude" and Abbey Road on the world. Why, instead of wasting all that time, John and Yoko could've given 500 more interviews, and filmed countless more asses. Or John could've continued to explore [...]

John in "Nether-Nether Land"?

By |2014-08-23T15:25:02-07:00July 20, 2012|1969, john and yoko, John Lennon|

Commenter CMO#9 writes (slightly edited by me): I've been reading the latest issue of Vanity Fair and there is a profile of the late war correspondent Marie Colvin. The article mentions that growing up, Colvin idolized The New York Times war correspondent Gloria Emerson. That name should ring a bell for some of you and I have no doubt that you are familiar with her brief but polarizing entry into John's life, Michael. I believe it was either 1969 or 1970 when Ms. Emerson interviewed John (and Yoko) at Apple. She basically calls him a fool for him believing that his songs [...]

Rolling Stones open thread

By |2014-07-23T11:59:16-07:00July 12, 2012|1980, Beatles vs. Stones, John Lennon|

I'm taking the occasion of The Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary to declare the first-ever Hey Dullblog open thread. Any thoughts/opinions/stories about The Stones are welcome in the comments, especially if they have some relation to Our Guys, no matter how tangential. This is an experiment; if everybody has fun, we'll do more open threads. I'll start it off with what I immediately thought of this morning, when NPR told me it was 50 years since The Stones' first gig: You know, they're congratulating the Stones on being together 112 years. Whoooopee! At least Charlie and Bill still got their families. In the [...]

John Lennon’s favorite movie?

By |2013-08-07T04:11:06-07:00June 7, 2012|john and yoko, John Lennon|

El Topo poster by Graham Humphreys. Reading this post on "El Topo" at BoingBoing.com made me recall that I read somewhere it was John Lennon's favorite movie. Anybody ever seen it? Should I seek it out? I have an insatiable desire to watch pre-1980 movies, especially foreign ones, but I have a low tolerance for symbolism (Bresson's "Au Hasard Balthazar," for example, left me cold...well, the humans did. The donkey was superb). Opinions? Here's the movie's page on Rotten Tomatoes—surprisingly positive for an underground flick, right? Here's the trailer… http://youtu.be/ceHH3QGXvNw While researching this post, I ran across this post, which [...]

Lennon on playing live

By |2022-07-24T13:56:29-07:00May 30, 2012|concert, John Lennon|

"Was that a jelly baby?" Why did Lennon play live so rarely after the Beatles' demise? Michael and Craig have made some interesting remarks about this question on the comments for the "Keep 'Em Out / Let 'Em In" post, which inspired me to remind myself of what Lennon himself said about the matter. This is a quote from a June 1975 interview: "In '72 it [government harassment] was really getting to me. Not only was I physically having to appear in court cases, it just seemed like a toothache that wouldn't go away . . . There was a [...]

Keep ‘Em Out vs. Let ‘Em In: An Angle on Lennon & McCartney

By |2013-10-15T15:17:24-07:00May 23, 2012|John Lennon, Paul McCartney, solo|

John and Paul face off, 1969 Some thoughts about an aspect of Lennon's and McCartney's solo music, prompted by some recent re-listening. -- Nancy After the break up, each Beatle pursued his own musical sensibilities pretty much unchecked. Here I want to look at a difference between Lennon’s and McCartney’s solo music that hasn’t gotten much critical attention: Lennon’s tendency to write songs of rejection and McCartney’s tendency to write songs of invitation. Since we’re considering Lennon and McCartney, everything is maddeningly complicated. Presenting them as opposites or complements overlooks all the ways their music overlaps, and focusing on a [...]

“Poor old Buddy”

By |2013-08-13T22:50:42-07:00May 6, 2012|1972, john and yoko, John Lennon, solo|

DEVIN McKINNEY  •  Greil Marcus sends a link to this rare footage from 1972: John Lennon playing "Rock Island Line," with snatches of two Buddy Holly numbers, "Maybe Baby" and "Peggy Sue." Yoko provides handclaps for the first number (in rhythm!) and vocal interjections for the latter. But mainly it's just John's voice and raunchy guitar reaching out in time, coming back with a feeling you can see in his face. In return, I sent Marcus this photo I took on April 22, 2011, outside the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Buddy Holly played the night before his plane went [...]
