DEVIN McKINNEY  •  Another addition to the growing video library here at your favorite YouTube annex: Neil Young performing a Beatles classic to wind up a recent Dublin date. http://youtu.be/Od5MaiiUjtY Though Neil has never done much to associate himself with the Fabs, this song choice makes sense in at least one regard: I have always felt that the Young-Nitzsche "Expecting to Fly" (from the 1967 Buffalo Springfield Again) was a direct homage to/steal from Sgt. Pepper, particularly its royal finale. (And what about "Broken Arrow," from the same album? Or "Country Girl," from CSNY's Deja Vu? And pretty much the whole of [...]

They Said They Said

ED PARK • I remember seeing the Feelies open for R.E.M. back in 1986 (!), and remember them playing a great cover of "She Said She Said." A recent article in the Times about the group led me to do some wandering, and I came up with a nice snippet of the SSSS cover. Well at least we know who wrote THIS.   "I do not care for people named Burrell Webb, Margaret Fishback Powers and John Hughes. My poem titled "In My Life I Loved You More" was not written by the Beatles it was authored by me long before the song ever came out. I do however happen to like the song they later produced. ..." That's a comment on an article by Rachel Aviv that appeared last fall at the Poetry Foundation site, discussing the contested authorship of the poem "Footprints in the Sand." The Washington Post's Hank Steuver picks up [...]

My night of Rutlesmania

The Faux Fabs. People fortunate enough to witness a defining moment in human history always say the same thing: you can sense it happening. It’s as if there’s a subtle vibration, a whiff of something special in the air. If that’s true, no place in the world stank harder than Hollywood this past Monday night, as a majority of the world's celebrities packed themselves into the venerable Egyptian Theater to pay homage to one of the most important musical groups of our, or anyone’s, lifetime. Of course you already know who I’m talking about: Ron, Dirk, Stig, and Barry, the [...]
