Double coverage

Thanks for posting about covers, Nancy, and commenters, keep the links coming! I wasn't sure how to embed a video in a comment, so I'm putting up a fresh post. Back in high school, I became a fan of The Feelies, because they were opening for R.E.M. on the part of the tour that was passing through my town. Their debut, Crazy Rhythms, has this frenzied take on "Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)": https://youtu.be/k5o1-HxaRFM * And when I saw them, they covered "She Said, She Said"--I'm not sure if they ever recorded it (maybe as a B-side?). All you need is paint

I saw this painting on Regretsy, the site that comments snarkily on products offered for sale on Etsy. Readers of Hey Dullblog, which Beatle comes off worst here? Best?[Note that this is an old listing -- you can't buy this painting, but you can read the Regretsy post about it.]

The Beatles and Mad Men

The original Mad Men. Look at that hat, for example; that's MAD. Did Matthew Weiner follow the structure of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in the recently-completed fifth season of “Mad Men”? Yi! News site contributor Emily Viviani thinks so, and has developed this thesis over three posts, the first of which you can read here. Thanks go to commenter Craig for drawing the attention of Hey Dullblog to her pieces. -- Nancy Carr Viviani's case Some of the parallels Viviani draws are interesting (“At the Codfish Ball” as a take on “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”, [...]

The Casey Black album

By |2014-07-22T12:07:54-07:00January 16, 2011|Covers|

You'd think "Eleanor Rigby" would not be an ideal song to cover...but I dig my former student Casey Black's rendition: http://www.youtube.com/v/MiOy2gr0klU?fs=1&h More than once, one of Casey's originals has popped up on the ipod and I've thought: some Springsteen song I forgot? Check out this one: "The Sarge." (At the very least, he finds something to rhyme with "hippocampus.")POSTSCRIPT: Just noticed via FB that there's a stop-motion video for "The Sarge," the aforementioned Casey Black original—check it out ("hippocampus" occurs around the 1 minute mark): http://www.youtube.com/v/Cm5sex9ryfs?fs=1&h

Attention Harry Nilsson fans!

By |2021-06-15T17:40:04-07:00August 4, 2010|Beatle-inspired|

You know you're destined to be a rockstar when you have your school photo printed as a record sleeve. Good news! The Wrap.com reports that the 2006 Nilsson documentary, “Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)?” has finally found a distributor. The article says that the film will be at NYC's Cinema Village on September 10th, and be released on DVD before year's end. Folks, if I wasn't so sick these days, I'd fly out and lead a peaceful takeover of Cinema Village for an evening. I expect you to do Dullblog proud. I was lucky [...]

Covering "Julia"

By |2014-07-07T15:36:56-07:00February 23, 2010|Covers|

From Priscilla Ahn's blog: http://youtu.be/6rmlaXwAyJY Today was a beautiful, crisp, windy day. When I looked outside there was a big morning moon hanging so delicately in the sky. It made me think of my favorite Beatles' song, "Julia". I realized I didn't have the song in my computer though, and crazy enough, The White Album isn't available to purchase on itunes! (There's something I sort of like about that though) So I decided to cover it. It only took me 30 minutes, and it was simply to satisfy the "fix" I needed to hear, sing, and play this song. You can hear [...]
