Graphic swiped from Visual News. MIKE GERBER • "To render all of human experience into chart form”—is this a good idea? Unclear. Must we prepare for the ascension of our new, chart-toting overlords? Beyond the purview of this blog. All we can say for sure: Brooklyn-based graphic designers Pop Chart Lab have produced another in their series of incredibly beautiful, insanely detailed, not always so decipherable charts, this time about The Beatles. The Beatles Song Charts, Volumes I-III displays each member's contribution to each song, and is perfect for that Beatle-less space above your couch. Make any room your Beatle [...]

Harry Nilsson: The Shadow Beatle

By |2013-08-06T18:05:38-07:00August 5, 2013|Beatle-inspired, biography|

Harry Nilsson in the studio, right around the time John and Paul made him famous. Can I just assume that everybody reading this knows Harry Nilsson? If not, scroll down to the bottom of this post, and listen—I'll wait until you get back. (You can also go to the great Nilsson site "For The Love of Harry," but it's recently changed to invite-only.) Harry was one of the biggest Beatles fans around, and one of the few who could compose and sing almost as well as the Fabs themselves. He's also a really interesting window into our favorite foursome. “Harry [...]

A Beatles Tarot

Paul McCartney's Tarot card, The Fool. While looking for neat images with which to illustrate this post on The Beatles' in-house astrologer, I stumbled upon an interesting article on The Beatles and Tarot. As a sample, here's a portion of the entry on Paul's card, "The Fool": Interpretation: Paul needed the Beatles more than the others did. He thrived in the identity and framework provided by the group and flourished in the public acclaim of the concert stage. The Fool’s creativity made Paul the most natural musician, albeit wholly untrained, in the band. His innate Celtic romanticism revealed itself in [...]

Anybody else share your love?

By |2013-08-05T17:52:24-07:00May 19, 2013|1970s, Beatle-inspired|

The Beatles are my ultimate "fave rave," as they might say on Ready Steady Go; their stuff has always, and probably will always, sound just right to me. (There are pictures of me circa 1970, a 1-year-old freaking out with pleasure over "Back in the USSR," which proves two things: a) It's not just nostalgia, I have always genuinely LOVED Beatle music; and b) not all of the White Album makes me want to send Therapists Without Borders back to 1968.) There's only one other person that reliably gives me the same flood of endorphins: Stevie Wonder. And only his stuff from [...]

Ze Ramalho Covers "Another Day"

By |2015-12-28T12:16:13-08:00May 2, 2013|Beatle-inspired, Covers|

Crinsk Dee Night? Courtesy of Dusty Groove America, a great soul/funk/jazz/world record store here in Chicago, I've discovered a number of Brazilian artists doing Beatles covers. One of the most interesting albums is Ze Ramalho Canta Beatles, which includes some solo songs as well, like this version of "Another Day." Ramalho's delivery has really grown on me. And its good to see this song getting some positive attention, after years of being critically dismissed. As several on this blog have remarked (most recently Annie McNeil, in the "Drugs and Differences" thread), it's striking that McCartney often writes sympathetic songs about [...]

Intermission — Dylan Hicks

By |2013-08-20T12:23:45-07:00April 13, 2013|Beatle-inspired|

ED PARK • Dullblogger Devin and I share a friend in the novelist and singer/songwriter Dylan Hicks. (His 2012 book BOARDED WINDOWS also spawned an excellent album, DYLAN HICKS SINGS BOLLING GREENE—listen here.) I was poking around to find some more DH tunes, and found this charming number, "What I Want," which begins, "I just want to be the Monkee to your Beatle." The video is wantonly out of synch, but this is a toe-tapper with smile-making lyrics I thought HD readers might enjoy. http://youtu.be/mcc9Ccrx_Bg

A few fab cakes

The Cakewrecks blog focuses on those occasions when "professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong," but on Sundays it features successful confectionary feats. If you're in the mood for something sweet, you can read the whole post, which includes a dozen Beatles cakes, here.

Rundgren v. the Beatles

By |2014-07-23T11:58:56-07:00July 30, 2012|1970s, Beatle-inspired|

Todd Rundgren and his spat with Lennon came up in the comments thread on the "Ah, Girl" post -- I wasn't aware of it until Devin pointed it out. [Particulars here: http://trconnection.com/trconn.php/article=lennon.art#lennon]. The tenor of this interchange doesn't surprise me much, and brings into focus my sense of Rundgren's animosity toward the Beatles. Rundgren seems to have a clear case of what Harold Bloom would call "anxiety of influence" where the Beatles are concerned. That is, Rundgren knows both that he's influenced by them and that he can't play in their league musically, and resents that. His references to the Beatles feel particularly pointed. Rundgren's first group, [...]

One of the original Dullbloggers* and I met up last week to discuss recent doings on Hey Dullblog. He told me about an early Bob Marley cover of "And I Love Her" and Peter Tosh's take on "Here Comes the Sun." Check 'em out below--very nice! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZj741_WNb0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW2yivTVieU *The great Eugene, whose trivia quiz from 2008 made me laugh out loud.
