Mark Britton: Odds and Sodd

By |2015-01-10T18:36:23-08:00January 10, 2015|Beatle-inspired, Over the Transom|

Man on a mission-style chair: Singer-songwriter Mark Britton Singer-songwriter (and devoted Dullblog reader) Mark Britton recently pointed me to his latest collection of songs, called "Odds and Sodd." (Sodd is, apparently, a sort of empty-the-icebox Norwegian soup.) "Odds and Sodd" is very Beatle-influenced, he wrote me, and Mark Britton don't lie. I'm listening to it right now, and really enjoying it. Take a listen here on Soundcloud. Which tracks does Mark think Dullbloggers should start with? "I’d suggest 'Family Guy' as probably the most Beatley. Followed by Dear Rosa." But y'know, it's all sounding damn good to me -- I'm [...]

McCartney’s DJ Chris Holmes

By |2015-01-07T16:39:50-08:00January 7, 2015|concert, Covers, Remixes & Mashups|

LA-based DJ Chris Holmes. Now that I know what he looks like, maybe I'll bump into him. Rolling Stone comes in for a lot of licks here on Dullblog, mostly from me, mostly for its role in canonizing Lennon and demonizing McCartney in the early 70s. But they've gotten their act together since then, and the Stone's relentless Boomer-focus means that they do get into some interesting Beatle-related nooks and crannies. This article for example, on McCartney's DJ Chris Holmes. Holmes' mixes have been warming up Paul's crowd since 2009; he provided his set to RollingStone.com, and I've been listening [...]

The Beatles cocktail?

By |2022-04-08T10:10:10-07:00December 31, 2014|Beatle-inspired|

When you're a Beatle, every day is New Year's Eve. It's New Year's Eve, that most unabashedly alcoholic of holidays, and so my mind turned to an obvious question: if you were making a drink called "The Beatle," what would it be? Drinkify.org (.org? is it educational?) offers this opinion: "6 oz. of Mezcal, garnish with an olive." Mezcal? Why mezcal? That has as much to do with John, Paul, George and Ringo as rice wine with baby mice. What springs to my mind immediately -- as it does yours, too -- is Scotch and Coke. Was it in "Cellarful [...]

The Beatles as rock gods…literally

By |2014-12-28T13:52:46-08:00December 18, 2014|Beatle-inspired, Beatles merch, Beatles on the Web, India, rishikesh|

NANCY CARR • Sarah Yakawonis, who runs the Etsy shop Yakawonis Quilling, has created images of each of the Beatles as a literal rock god, with intriguing results. Looking perfectly contented, George. George, perfectly at home With George's affinity for Indian spiritual traditions, it's appropriate that he comes off particularly well (his portrait incorporates aspects of Krishna). With his beads and meditative posture, George looks like he'd be right at home in Rishikesh, and as if he could hold his serene pose indefinitely. Watch out for that fire, John. John, creating and destroying If John were a Hindu deity, [...]

Blackbird by Beautiful Noize

By |2014-12-15T11:41:07-08:00December 15, 2014|Covers|

Woefully behind on posting -- working on several new ones -- in addition to a roundtable discussion of John/Paul fan fiction (watch this space). In the meantime, please to enjoy this video sent in by reader Raffael Holzhauser. Raffael wrote: Here's a little music video of my band's cover (or let's say reinterpretation) of Paul's "Blackbird." I hope you enjoy it! I did, Raffael, thank you. Hope the rest of you enjoy Blackbird by Beautiful Noize. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3dbowVdpSU

Collector’s Edition by Stuart Tolley

By |2014-12-30T23:59:21-08:00December 1, 2014|books, Covers, Paul McCartney|

In the run-up to the holiday, I'm going to begin posting on some of the Beatle books that have been hurled over our e-transom in the last several months. This morning author Stuart Talley wrote to tell me about his book Collector's Edition, a roundup of the graphic and product design employed in limited-run collectibles. It looks like a fascinating book -- who wouldn't want a peep at The Vatican Secret Archives, for example, "hand-bound in the Vatican and produced in an edition of just 33 copies"? "One Man and His Dog......" by Paul McCartney But there's something of special [...]

“Art of McCartney” tribute album mostly meh

By |2014-11-25T07:56:03-08:00November 25, 2014|Beatles tributes, Bob Dylan, Covers, Paul McCartney, Uncategorized, Wings|

NANCY CARR * The recently released "Art of McCartney" tribute album could have been--should have been--so much better. Lots of songs and lots of artists, many of them big names. But the album suffers from two major problems: the track list is weighted toward songs that have been covered a lot (often better than here), and too many of the performers stick so close to the original arrangements that at times the effect is Karaoke Night at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For example, both Billy Joel cuts, "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Live and Let Die," are virtual reenactments of [...]

Flaming Lips’ “With a Little Help from My Fwends”: Sgt. Pepper’s through a 21st century blender

By |2014-11-03T10:09:08-08:00November 3, 2014|1967, Covers, Drugs, Flaming Lips, Psychedelia, Sgt. Pepper|

Watch up for that blue goo--it really gums up the songs. NANCY CARR * With a Little Help from My Fwends, the Sgt. Pepper’s tribute album from the Flaming Lips and a bunch of their buddies, is a frequently painful listening experience that is also revelatory. It’s just that much of what it reveals leads to depressing conclusions about how the 21st century is shaping up. This is a true cover album, in the sense that Booker T. and the MG’s McLemore Avenue is, and that Mojo magazine compilations of various people doing songs from Revolver or Yellow Submarine aren’t. [...]

Beatles in Austin

By |2014-06-03T07:39:49-07:00June 3, 2014|Beatle-inspired, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Sgt. Pepper|

"We're coming to take you away -- FOREVER!" "Yoko, I've a feeling we're not in Manhattan anymore." NANCY CARR * My recent stroll down South Congress in Austin proved again that the Beatles are everywhere. I especially liked Sgt. Pepper's Day of the Dead Club Band at the Mi Casa folk art shop. The prize for sheer oddness goes to the St. Vincent De Paul thrift shop, which has John Lennon, rendered in chalk,  presiding over the linen department. And "smile even if you don't want to" strikes me as one of the mottoes Paul McCartney lives by. [...]

Imagine Beatles chocolates

By |2014-04-22T09:51:50-07:00April 22, 2014|Beatle-inspired, Beatles merch, Paul McCartney, Ram, The White Album, Uncategorized|

Linda, I need another chocolate stat!   NANCY CARR * Spring is finally here, and the holy people are out smelling the grass in the meadow. It’s the perfect time to have a Monkberry Moon Delight chocolate, courtesy of the folks at Imagine Chocolate. Appropriately, it has plenty of nuts. And it's part of the "Sir Paul" assortment, of course. If you're not feeling that much sweetness, you could try something from the White Album assortment. But you'll have to have them all pulled out after the Savoy Truffle. [Note: I found these by happenstance while looking up the lyrics [...]
