World Party: What The Beatles Might Have Sounded Like Had They Been Just One Guy (Who Grew Up Listening to The Beatles)

Karl Wallinger c. 1991, Lennoning. DEVIN McKINNEY  •  Last week, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing World Party perform at City Winery in Manhattan. World Party is Karl Wallinger, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has been making music on and off since the late ‘70s, first with The Waterboys and then on his own. For the last few years he’s been performing in America and England, usually accompanied by fiddler-mandolinist Dave Duffy and guitarist John Turnbull. He’s one of my favorite musicians ever, not just Beatles-influenced but Beatles-besotted, and I really don’t know why it’s taken me so [...]

Ze Ramalho Covers "Another Day"

Crinsk Dee Night? Courtesy of Dusty Groove America, a great soul/funk/jazz/world record store here in Chicago, I've discovered a number of Brazilian artists doing Beatles covers. One of the most interesting albums is Ze Ramalho Canta Beatles, which includes some solo songs as well, like this version of "Another Day." Ramalho's delivery has really grown on me. And its good to see this song getting some positive attention, after years of being critically dismissed. As several on this blog have remarked (most recently Annie McNeil, in the "Drugs and Differences" thread), it's striking that McCartney often writes sympathetic songs about [...]

One of the original Dullbloggers* and I met up last week to discuss recent doings on Hey Dullblog. He told me about an early Bob Marley cover of "And I Love Her" and Peter Tosh's take on "Here Comes the Sun." Check 'em out below--very nice! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZj741_WNb0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW2yivTVieU *The great Eugene, whose trivia quiz from 2008 made me laugh out loud.

Thanks for posting about covers, Nancy, and commenters, keep the links coming! I wasn't sure how to embed a video in a comment, so I'm putting up a fresh post. Back in high school, I became a fan of The Feelies, because they were opening for R.E.M. on the part of the tour that was passing through my town. Their debut, Crazy Rhythms, has this frenzied take on "Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except Me and My Monkey)": https://youtu.be/k5o1-HxaRFM * And when I saw them, they covered "She Said, She Said"--I'm not sure if they ever recorded it (maybe as a B-side?). The Casey Black album

You'd think "Eleanor Rigby" would not be an ideal song to cover...but I dig my former student Casey Black's rendition: http://www.youtube.com/v/MiOy2gr0klU?fs=1&h More than once, one of Casey's originals has popped up on the ipod and I've thought: some Springsteen song I forgot? Check out this one: "The Sarge." (At the very least, he finds something to rhyme with "hippocampus.")POSTSCRIPT: Just noticed via FB that there's a stop-motion video for "The Sarge," the aforementioned Casey Black original—check it out ("hippocampus" occurs around the 1 minute mark): http://www.youtube.com/v/Cm5sex9ryfs?fs=1&h

Covering "Julia"

From Priscilla Ahn's blog: http://youtu.be/6rmlaXwAyJY Today was a beautiful, crisp, windy day. When I looked outside there was a big morning moon hanging so delicately in the sky. It made me think of my favorite Beatles' song, "Julia". I realized I didn't have the song in my computer though, and crazy enough, The White Album isn't available to purchase on itunes! (There's something I sort of like about that though) So I decided to cover it. It only took me 30 minutes, and it was simply to satisfy the "fix" I needed to hear, sing, and play this song. You can hear [...]

Jay-R's mashup of of L'Trimm's "Cars with the Boom," Gary Numan's "Cars," and the Beatles' "Drive My Car." Thank you, Jay-R. Interesting fun fact as of July 2014: L'Trimm's Bunny D. has been married five times (never, though, to Jay-R) and has four children from her first four marriages, which is an admirable kind of efficiency. She has published a series of children's books and is working on a clothing line. Luck and happiness to you, Bunny D.! (And Lady Tigra and, of course, Jay-R.) http://www.youtube.com/v/wfmUv2FNDjE&h
