Texas Tech is a college team. That’s how un-NFL the Beatles are.
In what may be the strangest post ever on Hey Dullblog…please permit me a brainstorm.
For the past several years, I have played fantasy football. In this meta-sport, each individual selects a group of (American) football players. The weekly stat totals of your group are turned into points, which are then compared to the group you are playing that week. If you have any interest whatever in the NFL, it’s incredibly addictive and fun.
I would be happy to run a league — eight minimum, probably fourteen maximum — for Dullblog readers. There won’t be any money involved, but the winner, and some runners-up, will receive a box full of Beatles swag.
I am making this offer with no idea — repeat: no idea — whether fifty of you will respond, or none.
As we all know, the Beatles were decidedly allergic to sports (Paul supports Everton in the English Premier League); but I enjoy this hobby immensely, and enjoy all you Dullblog readers even more immensely. So I thought I’d make the offer. Anyone interested in playing in the DBFL, contact me via the site. Deadline is, let’s say, Friday September 4th, 2015.

As an aside, that’s not the first time I’ve seen a video of John during the 70’s when he expressed openness to the idea of a Beatles’ reunion.
Feel free, but can you at least promise to do it in private and never post about it?

It’s as simple as this: I’m always looking for ways to build a bit more community into Dullblog. Lobbing opinions into the ether loses its savor after, what? eight years? Running a FF league is something I know I can pull off which would be fun for whoever does it… and a great way to give away some Beatle merch. But please, contribute any and all suggestions of what else we might do!
Groups of fans, if they are sufficiently vocal, can convince a brand’s corporate caretakers to move in certain directions and away from others. You want to hear “Carnival of Light,” that’s the way it’s going to happen. Dullblog is a natural place for vocal and passionate Beatles fans to collect, and if we can continue to build community, it might potentially be of some benefit to Greater Beatledom. Furthermore, there are people with worthy Beatle-stuff who are looking for efficient ways to spread the word. We don’t sell ads, and I have no intention of doing that, but the stronger a community we build here, the more likely I’ll be able to approach people on the site’s behalf and arrange discounts and such. For example, this book, which I saw at Beatlefest and ravenously covet. Given the logistics of self-publishing, if we can gather 100 people to order it directly, the publisher may well give us a discount. But that can only happen with more traffic, more commenting, and more f2f IRL encounters.
So: from guest posts to fantasy football, I’m looking to add features in here that our audience will enjoy. No suggestion too loopy.
Breathing life into this thread…I’m a huge fantasy football nerd, have played since I was a kid and we tracked stats by hand (teachers in school actually supported this since we were willingly doing Math)
That Lennon on MNF clip I’ve always found fascinating, especially his take on the sport. “Why half the team is on and the other half is off”. Basically not yet grasping the concept of offense, defense, special teams etc.
I can see football as just one of those things that Lennon had maybe a brief strong interest to learn and follow…and then he just outright dropped it and never cared much for it again. Supposedly at that Monday Night game where Cosell interviews him, he was actually sitting with Governor Reagan who was trying to explain the rules to him.
The only Beatle who didn’t seem to be indifferent to sports was George who liked auto racing (and was pretty passionate about it) but none of them seemed to care much about organized team human on human sports.
