Via Beatles fan Colin Fleming’s FB feed: Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, “Brand New Cadillac.” (Also of interest to Clash fans.) Is it Ringo?
This is a great song. Drumming sounds nothing like Ringo to me though – no swing.
Yeah I agree…great song! I’ve always wondered what some of the other L’pool groups (the ones that didn’t get contracts) sounded like. The Hurricanes aren’t too bad at all. I’m surprised because a few people (the Beatles in particular) said that the Hurricanes were “crummy”. Happily I disagree with that assessment. Don’t have a clue if that is Ringo playing with them. I agree it doesn’t really sound like his style, but if this is an early performance perhaps he hadn’t perfected his sound yet and was still playing like the other drummers at the time. That guitarist is pretty good though.
From what I have read, Rory & the Hurricanes were the best band in Liverpool – from an entertainment standpoint. I have heard 5 tracks professionally recorded by the band – none of which come any where near the quality of The Beatles or Gerry & The Pacemakers or The Searchers and other Liverpool bands that got signed. I also wondered if this was an less experienced Ringo playing, before he got his chops down. I think, even if he were mimicking the style of others from the day, he would have done it with swing, not such a rigid style – if that makes sense.
I remember reading an interview (with Rory’s sister, maybe?)when this was released last year:

I’m fairly sure that the song in the video is taken from this album.
Ringo is not drumming with the band for this recording. I think it was done after he left. The drummer heard here is not very good at all… they lost an awful lot when Ringo joined the Beatles.
I agree that this doesn’t sound like Ringo. The drummer here is really rather plodding and he drags behind the beat pretty badly. Ringo has always been a rock solid timekeeper.

Good point Mark. Having listened to it a few times now, I definitely see what you mean.

Yes Fabrich and having heard this a few times now, I think it’s the song itself that I was responding to as “good” and not the band. IMO Alan’s singing style leaves a lot to be desired unfortunately. Perhaps if he had been given a contract he would have had a lot to learn about singing and would have had to play catch up to people like Lennon and McCartney, and the Searchers. As a singer Alan sounds amateurish, while I never heard that in the Beatles even from their earliest recordings. As far as the Hurricanes being considered the best entertainers on the L’pool beat scene, that seems true before the Beatles went to Hamburg. But after they came back I think they blew Alan out of the water in that department too.
This is cool!
