MIKE GERBER • Volume One of Mark Lewisohn’s Beatles bio series is slated for October, promising to be full of Lewisohn’s trainspotter-y goodness!
Just who was Torchy the Battery-Boy, and how did he influence a young Paul McCartney? Did George Harrison first read two of the Four Noble Truths scrawled on the wall of his father’s city bus?
Brief but exciting web-teaser is here.
I really hope this comes out on schedule, and that the other volumes follow with some despatch. Lewisohn is one of the only people I can think of with a real prospect of giving a fresh, well-informed look at the Beatles’ history.
And on the subject of waiting . . . . . still awaiting on Mikal Gilmore’s too-aptly titled “The Winding Road.” Amazon is now listing it with a release date of December 31, 2030. It was originally scheduled for publication in October of 2011. I really wonder what’s going on, and wish Gilmore well with the project, because his “Rolling Stone” article was one of the smartest things I’ve read about the band.
Yes, we’ve been promised the first Lewisohn installment a number of times. Can only hope this is the one. Regardless of his writing style–which I like, finding it companionable if not electrifying–his access alone is sure to make it revelatory.
Nancy, that “2030” on Amazon must be a typo. I posted a link to a Gilmore excerpt back in Summer 2011, and at that time the pub. date was already slated at 2013.

2030? Gilmore’s book is coming out in 2030?
Gees, I thought that was a typo of Nancy’s but when I checked Amazon, it really does say 2030. I think they must mean December 2013. And it’s odd that it’s only indicated that it’s coming out on Kindle? No print copy? The project must have gotten delayed and I bet Amazon really doesn’t have any accurate info on it.
As for Lewisohn, he’s not known for his writing but for his research, right? Still, if anyone is going to have any new information on the band, it will be his book.
