I have always been simply potty for John and Paul’s “favorite American group,” born 80 years ago today on June 15, 1941. Here are a few of our posts on Harry over the years.
2010: Info on the film “Who Is Harry Nilsson? (And why is everybody talking about him?)”
2011: Nilsson’s cover of “Isolation”
2013: Harry Nilsson: The Shadow Beatle (MG discusses the tragic arc of Nilsson and Lennon)
2014: Jimmy Webb on Harry Nilsson
2019: A Touch of Nilsson in the Night (Pussycats era demos)
It is my tragic fate to have been born one day before Harry. Guess who I share a birthday with? Donald Fucking Trump. (Though my friends consider me an equal mix of Boy George, Steffi Graf and Ernesto “Che” Guevara.)
To celebrate Harry, I’m listening to The Point, a truly splendid collection of pop songs; they are the soundtrack to a trippy only-in-the-early-70s cartoon which can be found linked in the first post listed above. I always think of it as the grubby younger brother to Yellow Submarine.
For what it’s worth, I always enjoyed Nilsson’s cover of Subterranean Homesick Blues (produced by Lennon). Sounds a bit (more like….a lot) like Nutbush City Limits.
Without wanting to ask a total stranger about something that may be considered private… why Steffi Graf?
Also born June 14, like me, Trump, Boy George, Che, etc. 🙂
First time I ever heard Nilsson, I didn’t even know I was hearing him. And I didn’t know who he was.
When I was 11 in 1969, one of the TV shows I watched was “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” and the theme song was drilled into my mind: “People let me tell you ’bout my best friend….”
Looking back, I suspect the only reason I watched the show was because Bill Bixby had been in “My Favorite Martian”.
I didn’t really know who Harry was until I heard “Spaceman” on the radio. Then I was hooked.
I liked Richard Perry’s production style. It wasn’t overbearing. It reminded me somewhat of George Martin’s work.
I met Harry at the Chicago BeatleFest (as it was known at that time) where he was a guest, i think it was in 1982. I have his autograph on something he was promoting as an action against handguns, in memory of John.
