Those of you on the rightly maligned hellsite Twitter can, and really must, follow us. We’re at @HeyDullblog. (And I’m personally at @mgerber937.) I say this for two reasons:
The first is, lots of Beatle and Beatle-adjacent news breaks on Twitter, and so we’ll be able to comment on John’s love letters to Paul the VERY MOMENT they are released.
“Dear Paul: What I propose is to COMMUNICATE SECRETLY through all our songs for the rest of our lives. Just in case all the meaningful glances and times we (seemingly inadvertently) (hah! as if) touched each other’s arm are not sufficient enough to clue the world in to the fact that we are rogering each other senseless on the regular. (BTW, keep your eyes open for the signet ring I lost in your underwear. Cyn noticed.) Now you might say, ‘Why not just come out? Why wouldn’t I, John Lennon, utterly unable to keep myself from babbling on about my latest enthusiasm, and ever-aware of publicity just, y’know, say it? Well…”
The second is, oh I had so much fun writing that paragraph I’ve forgotten what it is. Oh, I remember: I’m spending a lot of time on Twitter these days (@mgerber937 in case you’re interested) and, as you can see, it’s doing wonders for my powers of concentration and general mental health.
Anyway. Go follow. Maybe we’ll have fun? Plus, @beatlespetebest drops the occasional truth bomb.
Please edit the post so it includes a working link to your Twitter account! We love our Beatles but we are a lazy bunch.
I think it’s fairly standard link – https://twitter.com/heydullblog (you can try the same for your personal account).
When I was a child in the early 70s, I truly thought the lyrics to “Happy Christmas (war is over)” we’re “war is over, here tomorrow”. Little did I realise how apt that would be as a statement about our “leaders” from the 80s onwards.
Done! And Happy Chrimble to you!
And happy Christmas to you – war is over, here tomorrow!
Somehow your links have gotten mangled. Not sure why but a few extra characters have been added to the end of the Twitter links and so they’re broken.
Computers are still simply too complicated.
McCartney Three! I’m enjoying this album. Clever album cover, too. Every new endeavor is a dice roll. Reminds me somewhat of the first solo album cover, “Life Is A Bowl of Cherries (spilled)”
The drums on Deep Down remind me of a certain Beatles record.
Long Tailed Winter Bird really surprised me. I thought it’d be another Blackbird acoustic ballad. It carried me along, same way some old Beatle songs used to. He really knows how to create a groove. Another one for Paul’s Aviary.
Of course Paul’s voice is old now, but I LOVE the way he harmonizes with himself, plays around with octaves, etc. An old instrument but still a good one.
The man’s head is so full of melody! I was humming along with Find My Way before it had even ended.
The sound is tasty. Dry. Texture upon texture, without any of that glossy Spector reverb. No wall of sound. It’s more of a beautiful tall evergreen hedge. I’m impressed because lots of artists Paul’s age might be tempted to echo the hell out of their voices. Paul instead says “Here I am, no filters.” (I wish John had recorded his voice like that on all his solo releases.)
I love the piano. I’ve said before that George Martin excelled at two things (aside from his orchestral arrangements): I loved the way he recorded pianos… and Lennon’s voice. The piano on McCartney III is so satisfying, it’s almost a tribute to Martin.
“It’s still alright to be nice/Yankee toes and Eskimos…”
I have to hand it to Paul. He may not be a poet but his use of irony in this verse is top notch.
Solid album, though. Each ‘McCartney’ has gotten progressively better. He sounds great on III and there is none of the self-indulgence that marked the previous two. The first had Maybe I’m Amazed and the second had One of These Days. There isn’t a song on III to match either of those but the album as a whole is superior IMO. Long Tailed Winter Bird surprised me as well, in a good way. Expected a sleepy ballad. My expections for Deep Deep Feeling were sky high because of the raves people were giving it, so naturally I was disappointed a bit – thinking it was going to be like something off of Electric Arguments. I actually prefer Deep Down and that’s the one that’s getting tagged as the weakest track. To me, Lavoratory Lil is the weakest (the beginning reminds me of Helen Wheels), followed by Pretty Boys which sounds like an Early Days re-write. Paul singing like Fats Domino on Women and Wives was jarring at first, but I think this song is among the best. I prefer Slidin’ to Find My Way as far as uptempo songs go. The vocal for When Winter Comes is actually from 1992 but it doesn’t seem out of place.
Hellsite indeed! Worse than facebook, I think. A couple weeks ago I banned myself from FB and Twitter for two months because I was getting too much politics on “trending for you” and I was obsessively getting upset at what I perceived as insanity from our country’s current leadership, and kept getting the urge to come off “private” and say snarky things to lawmakers, so it was either get off all non-fannish social media or have a daily panic attack. So afterwards I’ll see you on there.
.
And don’t be silly, @Michael Gerber. John has already blabbed about him and Paul. I do look forward to the love letter evidence, however. ;D
Ahahaha and now even without twitter I see there is a “Get Back” preview from Peter Jackson, and the footage is so crisp and beautiful and happy. What a lovely thing for a Monday morning.
