Commenter @Linda S. sent me this lovely video of George Harrison singing a Dark Horse demo. Just the thing on this rainy SoCal Sunday. (BTW, I was interested to learn — via Wikipedia (so…y’know) — that “[a] number of music critics rate Dark Horse as one of Harrison’s finest post-Beatles compositions and believe that the single would have achieved greater success with a cleaner vocal performance.”
I always liked the original version of “Dark Horse” all the way back to the day, but just between you and me, I think I prefer George Harrison’s demo version of practically every song he ever recorded — even the classics “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Something.” Maybe it’s that, to my ears anyway, the sonic syrup that got poured over everything in the late 60s and 70s drowned out George’s delicate, wispy voice. Not sure. Anyway, I tend to prefer him alone with a guitar.
